WORDS / JOE

← STORY

A Resident of District 54

This is a story about a town — and, in another sense, a story about me.

WORDS / JOE
This is District 54. I am a resident of this town. For as long as anyone could remember, there had been an alarm system here, created to protect the town. Whenever something dangerous entered from outside, the alarm would sound. And the residents would rush out of their homes all at once. They ran through the streets, searched the alleys, and combed through the buildings. Their job was to find the intruder and drive it out of town. There was another strange feature of this place. Whenever the alarm sounded, the temperature of the town itself began to rise. Slowly. But steadily. The heat was meant to make the town inhospitable to intruders. The town itself would grow hot in order to protect everyone within it. That was how it had always worked. And so, no one had ever questioned the alarm. Then one day, without warning, the alarm screamed across District 54. The residents poured into the streets and began searching for the intruder. The town gates were shut. People gathered at the watchtowers. Every street, every alley, was searched. But no intruder was found. And while they searched, the town grew hotter. 38°C. 39°C. 40°C. Heat rose from the stone streets. Windows clouded over. Walls held the heat. And even after night fell, the town would not cool. Still, the alarm kept sounding. The residents thought, It must still be here somewhere. So they kept searching. Morning. Afternoon. Night. Then, other strange things began to happen. At the center of town were several bridges. They joined one building to another. One road to the next. They were important bridges, made to bend and move, connecting the town in every direction. One day, they began to creak. Every time someone crossed, a painful groan echoed through the town. A bridge that had moved easily yesterday was stiff today. Another would barely move in the morning. And then, faint patches of red began appearing on walls and along the streets. They emerged toward evening, then disappeared without warning. No one had painted them. There had been no fire. No one knew why they were there. The residents were confused. They still had to find the intruder. But now, they also had to repair the town itself. They fixed the damaged bridges. They repaired roads weakened by the heat. They inspected the places stained red. And all the while, the alarm kept sounding. Then one day, just as suddenly, the alarm fell silent. The town began to cool. At last, the residents let themselves breathe again. Slowly, life began to settle. ──── ──────── ──────────── But a few days later, it happened again. The alarm rang through District 54. The residents ran. The town grew hot. The bridges creaked. The red lights returned. And once again, nothing was found. It happened over and over. Alarm. Search. Heat. Repair. Silence. And then, the alarm again. Little by little, the residents grew tired. The town itself began to wear down. Still, whenever the alarm sounded, the residents ran. They only wanted to protect the town. That was all. They only wanted to keep it safe. There was a man who lived in District 54. Every day, he watched all of this unfold. Why, he wondered, did this keep happening? A town that had been quiet only yesterday would suddenly, without warning, grow hot again. The bridges would creak. The alarm would sound. And still, nothing would be found. The man could not understand it. Had he done something wrong? Had he failed to care for this town properly? Had he made some mistake without even knowing it? Was that why this kept happening? He thought about it again and again. There was no answer. He asked others. There was no answer. Only the alarm. The town heated up again. The bridges creaked again. The residents began running again. And the man thought, Enough. I've had enough. How many times must this happen? How many times must I watch this town get hurt? I only want to live quietly. That is all I want. “Please. Just stop ringing.” He whispered the words to no one in particular. But the alarm kept sounding. That night, the man lay down. He was exhausted. He wanted to close his eyes, stop thinking, and simply sleep. But he could not. The town was too hot. No matter which way he turned, there was no escape from the heat. Every bridge seemed to creak, and even the smallest movement sent painful sounds through the town. Even lying still did not bring relief. He wanted to rest. That was all. But the town would not let him. He closed his eyes, but he could still hear the alarm. He lay perfectly still, but the heat remained. He searched for somewhere quiet, but there was nowhere in the town to hide. In District 54, when everything runs out of control, there are nights when even sleep is taken away. The man stared out over the town, unable to sleep. A town burning with heat. Creaking bridges. Residents rushing endlessly through the streets. Why, he wondered, did he have to go through this? What had he done to deserve it? He only wanted a peaceful life. Nothing more. He thought it again. And again. If only I could leave this town. He had thought it more times than he could count. If he could simply open the door and go somewhere far away. Leave the alarm behind. Leave the heat behind. Leave the creaking bridges behind. If only he could walk away from all of it. But he knew. This was not the kind of town you could escape simply by walking out the door. No matter how far he went, District 54 would go with him. Until morning came, the man did nothing but wait for the alarm to stop. And then, a thought came to him. Was there really an intruder here at all? The alarm was sounding. So everyone assumed there had to be an intruder. But no one had ever seen one. The man began to wonder. What if— what if there was no intruder? What if the alarm itself was getting something wrong? The next morning, the man traveled beyond the town to a certain institution. It was a vast building, a place that investigated strange events with no obvious cause. The man asked them to investigate District 54. Was there truly an intruder? Why did the alarm keep sounding? And was the alarm system itself working as it should? The investigation began. The town gates. The water. The air. The buildings. The food stores. The tunnels beneath the streets. Every possible place was examined one by one. But no intruder was found. No trace of one was found either. And still, the alarm in District 54 continued to ring. So the investigators turned their attention to the alarm system itself. And eventually, they discovered something strange. The alarm system was trying to protect the town. It had not forgotten its purpose. It was not completely broken. It had simply lost the ability to know when to stop. Even when there was no longer a need, it continued sending warnings. Danger. Raise the temperature. Call the residents. It is not over yet. Those orders were being sent across the town again and again. The residents had only been following them. And the alarm system, like the residents, had only been trying to protect the town. But its urge to protect had become too strong. And in the process, it had begun to harm the very town it was meant to save. The man asked one of the investigators, “Can you stop the alarm?” The investigator answered. “We won't destroy it completely.” “If real danger comes one day, this alarm will still be needed.” The man nodded quietly. “Then what will you do?” The investigator unfolded a map of the town. Then, in a calm voice, said, “We'll keep it from ringing more than it needs to.” And so, work began in District 54 to quiet the alarm. Nothing changed overnight. There were quiet days. And there were days when the alarm suddenly returned. Some mornings were peaceful, only for the town to grow hot again by evening. A bridge that moved easily yesterday might creak again today. But still, something was different. When the alarm sounded, the residents no longer rushed out in the same numbers as before. Some measured the temperature of the town. Some inspected the bridges. Some recorded the red lights. Others wrote down the exact times the alarm began to ring. And when necessary, they quieted the alarm itself. Little by little, District 54 learned a new way to live. Even now, the alarm sometimes sounds. The town may suddenly grow hot. The bridges may creak. Red lights may appear in the evening. There are days when a weariness no one can explain settles over the whole town. On days like those, even the town clock seems to move more slowly than usual. But things are different now. The residents know that an alarm does not always mean there is an intruder. And so, they have slowly learned not to keep running forever. Protecting the town. Letting the town rest. They learned that both matter. The man still lives in District 54. Sometimes, he remembers that night. The night he wanted to sleep, but could not. The night there was nowhere in town to escape to. The night he wanted only one thing: for the alarm to stop. And even now, sometimes he still wonders, Why me? What did I do? There is still no answer. Perhaps there never will be. But the man has begun to look at the town a little differently than before. Have I really been listening, he wonders, to what this town has been trying to tell me? He carries that thought with him as he goes on living there. On quiet days, he opens the window. A breeze comes through. Somewhere in the distance, children are laughing. The bridges are quiet today. The alarm is silent. And moments like these— ordinary moments— have come to mean more to him than they once did. A night when he can sleep. Hours that pass without the heat. A morning when he can cross a bridge without thinking about it. Things he once took for granted. Now, each one feels quietly precious. But the man knows. One day, without warning, the alarm may sound again. Even now, that thought frightens him. What if he is thrown back into that heat? What if the bridges begin to creak again? What if another sleepless night returns? What if another day comes when he thinks, “I can't take this anymore”? That fear has not disappeared completely. Still, he cannot leave this place. And now, he no longer wants to. Because this town is more than the places that have been damaged. There are residents who keep trying to protect it. There are bridges that can be repaired again and again. There is an alarm that can be quieted. There are windows that let the breeze in. There are nights when sleep comes. And there is a place where today can still be lived. This is District 54. I am a resident of this town.
